Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), confirmed that no damage to resorts or to infrastructure had been reported in Thailand as a result of the earthquake that struck Sunday night in India`s Nicobar Islands.

Mrs. Juthamas also announced that there had been no evidence of a tsunami along the Andaman Sea coastline although the nation did effectively exercise its new disaster early warning system and evacuation plan as a precautionary measure.

Governor Juthamas said in an official statement: Beach resorts and hotels on the Andaman coast were quickly alerted when the Nicobar Islands earthquake was reported Sunday night. Many of the resorts took advantage of the opportunity and implemented new beachfront evacuation procedures in the interest of safety. It was reassuring to see that these actions went ahead quickly and smoothly with a minimum of inconvenience to tourists. Most if not all resorts and tourism centers on both coasts kept careful watch through the night but are now back to normal operation.

Mrs. Juthamas added: The Royal Thai Government is committed to providing a satisfying, value-added and safe stay for holiday visitors and business travelers alike. I am particularly impressed at the cooperative and quick efforts of emergency response teams across Thailand in informing local authorities and resort managers and in activating evacuation plans and routes. I am even happier that the effort proved to be an exercise and that no real disaster or damage ensued.

Media and travel agents worldwide can always obtain continuing updates on the status of Thailand`s principal resorts and hotels from Thailand`s international network of consulate offices and from TAT`s public-access news alert site at www.tatnews.org on the Worldwide Web.

Governor Juthamas said: It is my hope that these updates will be used by reporters and travel agents to keep the public informed of the facts and educated about the world-class recreational and meeting resources that Thailand provides year in and year out for the international holiday and business traveler.
