New flights to Darwin, Australia taking off with SilkAir

Darwin, Australia will enjoy improved connectivity thanks to a new direct service with SilkAir – a wholly owned subsidary of Singapore Airlines. As of the 26 March 2012, SilkAir will commence a four times weekly service between Singapore and Darwin – the carrier’s first route into Australia.

Fleur Burrows, Consumer Marketing Manager for Tourism Northern Territory in the UK says: “We are delighted that SilkAir will now be introducing a regular service to Darwin, an increasingly popular Australian hub. The new route has the potential to deliver an additional 600 visitors to Darwin each week.

“Next year promises to be an exciting year for the Territory’s laidback capital, recently handpicked by Lonely Planet as a must visit city for 2012” added Burrows.

Flight MI802 will depart Singapore on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 19:30 hours arriving in Darwin at 01:45 +1 hours local time, with next day returns (MI801), departing Darwin at 02:30 hours, arriving into Singapore at 05:30 hours. The new full-service flights will be operated by Airbus A319 and A320, offering both business and economy cabins.

Capital of the Northern Territory, Darwin is Australia’s most northerly city, making it the natural gateway to both the Outback and the country as a whole. Located just four hours’ flight from Singapore and two hours from Bali, Darwin is considered to be Australia’s most culturally diverse city. The cosmopolitan city boasts a vibrant lifestyle centred around the outdoors, from al fresco dining and fine sunsets to beachside markets and sailing.

Virgin Australia will complement the new international service by offering a new daily domestic service between Sydney and Darwin, effective 2nd April 2012. To coincide with the new route, Virgin Australia has announced it would open a lounge facility at Darwin Airport.
