Myanmar Airways International targets Laos

Booming demand for Myanmar will be matched this winter season by Myanmar Airways International.

BANGKOK- With an expected growth in arrivals of 30% for 2012, airlines serving Myanmar muscle their offer, increasing capacities or opening new destinations. This winter will see in Yangon the return of Qatar Airways, the arrival of All Nippon Airways out of Tokyo while airlines such as AirAsia or Air Bagan are now looking at offering direct international services to Mandalay.

National air carrier Myanmar Airways International is also looking at expanding its network to two new destinations for the winter season. The carrier will open a seasonal flight to Gaya in India to cater for the Buddhist market doing pilgrimage. After Siem Reap during the last winter season, MAI continues to expand to Indochina by announcing its intention to fly Vientiane in Laos.  Planned frequencies to the Laotian capital would be three times a week. Confirmation is due to come soon from Laotian authorities. MAI will however stop serving its Singapore route via Bangkok but will continue to serve the route with non-stop flights.

According to Ye Jhan, MAI Country Manager for Thailand and Indochina, the carrier is also looking at ways to offer smoother connections for domestic flights. MAI could in the near future add some domestic destinations or seek a cooperation agreement with a domestic partner.
