Local standards for the conference service industry presented in Shanghai

Shanghai adopted new standards for MICE organizing in the metropolis. It is the first of its kind in Mainland in China.

SHANGHAI- On October 12, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision jointly released “The Management & Service Standards of the Conference Industry, Part 1: Conference Organizers“. The standards were proposed by Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and drafted by Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and Shanghai International Conference Management Organization. It is the first of the kind in China`s conference service industry and fills the gap in the sector.

The Management & Service Standard of the Conference Industry, Part 1: Conference Organizers” contains provisions on the basic requirements for conference organizers as well as for conference services, conference management, continuous service improvement and compliance assessment. Comprehensive and feasible, the document will help improve the service quality and professionalism of Shanghai`s conference service industry.

The conference industry is an important part and also an important starting point of the modern service industry. The past decade has seen rapid development of Shanghai`s meetings market. Take international conferences as an example, the number of international conferences hosted in Shanghai increased from 292 in 2002 to 745 in 2011, and the total number of participants also rose from 68,465 in 2005 to 204,040 in 2011. This standard is developed to meet the requirements for the development of the service industry in the new period. It is developed based on the extensive research of the actual development of Shanghai`s conference service industry and the market demand. It will become an important new yardstick used by the conference service industry to manage and evaluate itself and by the government to manage the conference service industry and keep a close eye on the service quality.
