Indonesia’s Vice President Jusuf Kalla on behalf of the government and himself has offered deep condolences to the families of victims of the Adam Air passenger plane which crashed into a mountainous area in Polewali-Mandar, West Sulawesi, on Monday.

On behalf of the government and myself, I would like to express my deep condolences to the families of the victims of the plane crash in Polewali-Mandar and the Senopati Nusantara ferry boat which sank off the coast of Semarang, Central Java, Kalla said in an unscheduled press conference at the vice presidential palace on Tuesday.

Twelve passengers survived and ninety others were reportedly killed when the Adam Air Boeing 737-400 plane with 103 people on board crashed during a flight from the East Java city of Surabaya to Manado in North Sulawesi. The plane fell in a mountainous area in Rangoan village in Polewali Mandar.

Meanwhile, at least 200 people survived but more than 400 others remained missing when the KM Senopati Nusantara, a ferry boat, sank in Central Java waters on Saturday.

In relation with the Adam Air crash, Kalla said he had instructed West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Anan Saleh, Polewali Mandar district head Alibaal and State Minister for Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Surya Dharma Ali to immediately inspect the plane crash location and take the necessary measure for the evacuation of the victims.

Since there are several survivors, necessary steps should be immediately taken to evacuate them to the nearest hospitals, the vice president said.

Asked about the cause of the Adam Air crash, Kalla said he had no information about it because it was the responsibility of the National Commission on Aviation Safety (KNKP) to explain the reason behind the accident.

However, he said the ill-fated plane was still air worthy and under international aviation rules, the airworthiness of a plane had its own standards.
