ICAO continues worldwide series of Safety Management Symposiums in Singapore

The regional event will focus on supporting Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Middle Eastern (MID) ICAO States and will be followed next month by the final event in the series in Kigali, Rwanda.

Singapore – Consistent with one of the key objectives of its Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) continued its worldwide series of Regional Safety Management Symposiums and Workshops in Singapore recently, promoting the use of risk-based aviation safety approaches by ICAO Member States.

The regional event will focus on supporting Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Middle Eastern (MID) ICAO States and will be followed next month by the final event in the series in Kigali, Rwanda.

It’s critical that we continue to encourage ICAO’s Member States to make use of the latest safety management approaches, especially so that they can effectively manage the forecast doubling of flights and passengers ahead,” commented ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu. “These events therefore play an important part in improving States’ understanding of the key role which safety management will play in ensuring a future air transportation system which 21st Century societies and businesses can continue to depend on.”

The UN aviation agency’s Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu, added that “the new tools ICAO is developing to support States in this area will help them to more efficiently share their examples and experience with one another. And the Workshop portions of these Symposia will be especially useful, providing practical exercises with the new apps we’ve developed through ICAO’s integrated Safety Trend Analysis and Reporting System (iSTARS).”

This latest series of safety management events are helping States to make progress in their transitions from reactive to predictive safety analysis and planning, to raise awareness on key safety management concepts among their aviation leaders, and to discuss the newest guidance contained in ICAO’s soon-to-be-released 4th Edition of its Safety Management Manual (Doc 9859), including the benefits expected from its companion online information and sharing platform.

We’re very pleased to be working with ICAO to host and support this important and timely safety management event in Singapore,” commented Mr Kevin Shum, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. “New technologies and processes have tremendous potential to further improve the safety of air travel, and this Symposium will provide aviation safety experts and professionals with the opportunity to learn about and exchange views on global best practices, ensuring continued improvements to aviation’s safety record.”
