Green is the new black at the ITC Royal Gardenia, Bangalore

Opening on 1st November 2009, the ITC Royal Gardenia hotel is bringing a new green offering into what was once known as India’s Garden City. The new hotel will offer a lush oasis in the midst of Bangalore’s business district, with vertical hanging gardens running through the wind-cooled atrium lobby and thousands of plants in its midst.

Embodying nature in both concept and design, the 292-room five-star deluxe hotel takes inspiration from different layers of life forms with each of the 11 floors individually themed on stones and fossils, earth, trees, water, fire, foliage, birds, butterflies, sky and cloud. The vertical gardens have been created to bring the mood of tropical forests to the interiors of the hotel.

In recent years, Bangalore has lost around 50,000 trees to various development projects so the ITC Royal Gardenia is bringing back some greenery to the city with its innovative use of 175,000 locally grown plants. In addition, the ‘green’ element is carried over into the running of the hotel that will aim to be carbon positive by early next year through its numerous green initiatives.

Some of these green initiatives include energy and water efficiency programmes (including the use of solar energy, renewable energy and a rainwater harvesting system) as well as recycling and waste reduction programmes, electric cars and green banqueting for conferences and events.

Located at Residency Road, one of the busiest avenues in Bangalore’s upscale central business district, the hotel also features ITC’s Kaya Kalp Spa, with eight treatment rooms, jacuzzis, sauna and steam baths and three restaurants offering Indian, Mediterranean and International food. The ITC Royal Gardenia is part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
