Five things you must do in Goa

Goa is many people’s dream destination and with its glorious beaches, fascinating culture and beautiful scenery it’s not hard to see why. This Indian Gem continues to attract thousands of visitors each year in search of a long-haul holiday escape, and with a population of just 1.5 million, this tiny state offers a small, but perfectly formed, slice of paradise.

Head to the beach
For many people holidays to Goa are all about the beaches, they are simply stunning.  Anjuna is arguably the most visited beach and boasts a picturesque coconut grove backdrop and a nearby flea market, ideal for picking up a souvenir or two for the folks back home. Those looking for a chilled out beach experience should head to Palolem, a serene beach offering a generous helping of peace and solitude. And, those wanting a livelier experience might want to consider Calangute and Baga.

Check out the churches

No trip to Goa is complete without visiting one of the churches.  One of the most famous is the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa. This world heritage site contains relics of St. Francis Xavier, patron saint of Goa, and became the first church in India to receive the status of a minor basilica. Other must-see churches include the Chapel of St. Catherine and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. You don’t have to be spiritual to enjoy a visit to one of these stunning buildings; they are filled with beautiful stonework, art and historic relics and are the perfect place for a spot of quiet contemplation.

Sample the cuisine
Part of the joy of a holiday to Goa is trying the simple yet delicious cuisine. The staple diet is fish curry and rice, although pork and chicken dishes are also popular. A perfect blend of influences, this part of India offers a fusion of Konkan, Portuguese and Bahamani Nawabi traditions making dishes spicy and flavoursome. Many restaurants are situated along the beach, adding to the holiday experience.

Find your sea legs
A great way to enjoy the scenery is by taking a river or sea cruise. There are lots of options available all at competitive prices so it’s worth shopping around. If you’d like to try a slightly different experience then a Full Moon Cruise offers a charming night time excursion, perfect for those of you in search of a romantic holiday memory for you and the other half. Or, if you fancy a flutter, head to the Casino Royale Goa, India’s largest floating casino vessel.

Commune with nature

If there’s just one thing you do in Goa, apart from hitting the beach, make sure you experience the wildlife. Salim Ali bird sanctuary is one of the best know nature preserves where you’ll see species such as the Mud Skipper and Black Drongo. One of the best wildlife sanctuaries is Mandovi Zuari where you’ll see fish, a variety of bird life, snakes and, if you’re really lucky, crocodiles and jackals.

If you’d like to experience Goa for yourself then there are many excellent value package holidays to be found, so make sure you do your research – a taste of paradise needn’t cost a fortune and is merely a mouse-click away.
