Asia Pacific`s top golf professionals teed off at the inaugural Crowne Plaza Open in Shanghai

InterContinental Hotels Group launched the golf event of the year, the Crowne Plaza Open Shanghai 2004, a professional golf tournament endorsed by the Asian Tour and the China Professional Golf Association (CPGA). Between 19 to 24 October, Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts hosted 120 of Asia Pacific`s top professional golfers as they vied for the coveted title and US$200,000 in prize money. Also walking the fairways were hundreds of business people and golf enthusiasts who took part in the Professional-Amateur challenge events.

Crowne Plaza Open Shanghai 2004 started with the InterContinental Hotels Groups Corporate Pro-AmChallenge on October 19 and the Priority Club Rewards Pro-Am Day on October 20. These two days were dedicated to InterContinental Hotels Group`s business partners, hotel General Managers, and elite members of Priority Club Rewards, who gathered at Shanghai`s exclusive Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, the city`s world-class championship golf club.

The first round of the professional tournament began on October 21 with players from the Top 40 of the CPGA, the Top 60 of the Asian Tour and the Top 20 of the Taiwan PGA Tour. The stellar lineup of top players included Thailand`s Thaworn Wiratchant, winner of multiple Asian Tour events and the 2001 Volvo Masters of Malaysia, China`s Shang Lei, the CPGA Silport Hai Yang Classic Champion 2004 and Li Chao, one of the Champions of the CPGA Tour 2003. Other countries, including Australia, Myanmar, Singapore and Taiwan were also well represented.

The professional tournament culminated in a grand finale on October 24, when the first Crowne Plaza Open Shanghai 2004 title champion went to Australian Terry Pilkardaris. The Crowne Plaza Open Shanghai 2004 has assured of a place in the China Professional Golf League record books as the tournament with the highest cash award and the highest number of top seed golfers participating since 1999. This was also the first time in China that a hotel brand has taken on the title sponsorship of a professional golf tournament by the Asian Tour and CPGA.
