It was a sight to behold when AirAsia’s Red Devil plane landed at Noi Bai Airport, Hanoi, recently in a country where football is a national passion. This marks AirAsia’s official entry into the capital of Vietnam from Kuala Lumpur and now the low fare airline begins daily flights between the two cities.

The airline’s maiden voyage touched down in anticipation by many who attended the welcome reception ceremony held at the capital’s international airport to welcome the inaugural flight to Hanoi. Flight AK762’s arrival was received by Datuk Ahmad Anuar Abdul Hamid, Malaysian Ambassador in Vietnam and Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia Berhad. The aircraft landed at approximately 7.30pm with an impressive 100% load of 180 guests on board and they were given a warm welcome reception upon disembarking from the aircraft.

Hanoi becomes the fourth gateway to Indo-China by AirAsia on top of Yangon, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, and is an exciting addition to the airline’s fast growing network in the ASEAN region. Thai AirAsia, AirAsia’s sister company is currently serving two daily Hanoi flights from Bangkok.

Dato’ Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia Berhad, said, “Going into our fifth year of operations, we have successfully revolutionized low cost travel in the region and penetrated many cities in ASEAN, therefore Hanoi is an inevitable choice. We aim to offer more choices for people to fly and low fare will definitely encourage that. Hanoi is an attractive market due to its strong tourism appeal and there has always been a strong demand for Malaysians as well as those in Asia to visit Vietnam.”

Dato’ Tony continued, “There is a surge in interest in this country which is emerging as one of the fastest growing market in Asia and Vietnam is rapidly modernizing, opening up its market and aggressively developing its economy. This is evident from the bulk of investment that is entering the country into the hospitality industry, manufacturing and property ventures. Tapping into this opportunity, we hope to offer an affordable alternative for frequent business travellers,”

“Having established a strong and enviable reputation for our one-of-a-kind service yet incredibly low fare, we have high expectations for this new route and we are confident of stimulating travel for both countries. This is why we have decided to fly our Airbus A320 for this route which has a bigger capacity. We feel that the timing is right to add Hanoi to our expanding international network and we will not hesitate to increase frequencies when the demand deems fit,” added Dato’ Tony.

“We also like to show how beautiful Malaysia is to Vietnam, and with us working closely with Tourism Malaysia in support of Visit Malaysia Year 2007, we are optimistic in boosting tourism economy and drive inbound passenger traffic for both countries,” concluded Dato’ Tony.
