2014 Value Destination Index

Visit some of the world’s most enchanting destinations without breaking the bank. The trivago Hotel Price Index shows the average overnight accommodation prices for a standard double room.

Hotel search site trivago.com has compiled a list of the best value destinations worldwide for 2014. Based on the yearly average overnight price of a standard double room, combined with the destinations’ overall hotel reputation (based on over 82 million traveler reviews), the index delivers a list of the world’s tops in terms of delivering the biggest bang for your buck on a vacation next year.

Ait Benhaddou in Morocco makes the top of the list in trivago’s top 50 Best Value Index for 2014. An overnight stay in a standard double room in the fortified city, where, among others, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones were shot, costs an average of $58. Despite its small size, this pre-Saharan ethereal enclave promises an unforgettable trip. Take a bike ride, visit local shops and climb to the top of the town to take in its spectacular views. Ait Benhaddou is one of the 26 destinations on the top 50 that is home to an UNESCO World Heritage site.

In runner-up Mostar (in Bosnia and Herzegovina), named after and famous for its 16th century Ottoman bridge, a hotel stay costs travelers an average $69/night. The same average price is paid for a stay in both the picturesque Greek village Chora, on the island Ios—which features idyllic white houses and blue rooftops, and in the Berber-influenced Moroccan town of Merzouga. A stay in Bhaktapur, the former Nepalese capital (at #5), is priced at only $58/night. Next on the list is Megalo Papigo ($80) of Greece, close to the world’s deepest gorge (Vikos Gorge), followed by Bolivia’s stunning Sucre (a UNESCO World Heritage site—$72/night) and 2700-year-old Pingyao in China ($61)—known as one of the most well-preserved ancient cities in the world. Rounding out the top 10 are Portuguese national park Peneda-Geres ($68) and Chinese resort destination Yangshuo ($59).

Some highlights of the top 50 are Nashik (#21, $93), voted Best Tourist Friendly City of India 2013 and most Innovative City of the World. European Capital of Culture 2007[5] Sibiu (Romania, $77) finishes in the 18th position.

Mexico, Thailand, India, Morocco, China, Greece, and Spain have strong representation on the list. Also noteworthy are the number of capital cities that deliver high value—Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina (#28, $91), Sofia, Bulgaria (#46, $87), and Hanoi, Vietnam (#50, $69).
