Thailand and Myanmar are now ready to develop and expand communication links between the two neighbouring countries, which will benefit trade, investment and tourism between the two neighbours, according to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

Suriya, who accompanied Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for the four-nation summit–Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos–in Myanmar, scheduled on 10-12 November, told TNA that he took the opportunity to discuss the development and expansion of communication links between the two neighbours with Myanmar authorities.

This was to be in line with the Thai government`s policy on boosting trade, investment and tourism cooperation with neighbouring countries after the kingdom had established free trade areas (FTA) with China and India, he disclosed.

During the talks, the Myanmar authorities and I agreed on the planned development and expansion of communication links between the two countries. We also agreed that Rangoon and Bangkok would conduct a joint study on how to expand the communication links, and on what routes to be developed first, taking their economic significances into consideration, he noted.

The development of communication links through expanding existing railroads and highways, as well as building new ones will help reduce transport costs for businesses and people of the two countries, which will then boost cross-border trade, investment, and tourism between the two neighbours in the future, said the transport minister.
