Passenger throughput in more than 600 airports worldwide rose 6%, cargo 8% and movements 2% in March 2000 compared with March 1999 according to the Airports Council International–
In March 2000, the strongest passenger growth was registered in the Middle East (13%), followed by Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe (7%), North America (5%) and Latin America/Caribbean (4%). Atlanta Hartsfield with over 7 million passengers handled continues to be the world`s busiest airport. On the other hand, Madrid – Barajas (16.8%) is the fastest growing airport among the top 30 airports worldwide followed by Seoul (10.9%) and Las Vegas (10.6%).
Aircraft movements rose in Africa (9%), Middle East (7%), Europe (5%), Asia/Pacific (4%), and Latin America/Caribbean (1%). They remained unchanged in North America. The top 30 airports handled over a quarter of the world`s total aircraft movements with Atlanta, Chicago-O`Hare, and Dallas/Ft.Worth leading the pack.
