Stranded in snow: Tourist ordeal in China’s Xinjiang

Avalanche

Around 1,000 tourists are stranded in Hemu village, Xinjiang, due to severe avalanches, with snow reaching up to seven meters.

In a recent incident approximately 1,000 tourists found themselves stranded in Hemu village, a remote holiday spot in China‘s northwestern Xinjiang region, following severe avalanches. The village, known for its scenic beauty near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia, has been inaccessible by road for several days due to continuous snowfall.

The avalanches, which resulted from heavy snowfall in the Altay Prefecture, have impacted large sections of highways in the mountainous area. The snow, in some places reaching up to seven meters high, has exceeded the capacity of snow-clearing equipment. Efforts to clear a 50-km stretch of road have been underway for over a week.

The rescue operations have been complicated by the presence of rocks, debris, and tree branches in the snow, making rotary snowplow vehicles ineffective. Rescuers have had to resort to using shovels and excavators. Rapid weather changes in the area have also narrowed the windows for operating supply missions.

The situation highlights the challenges of managing natural disasters in remote and mountainous regions. The incident in Xinjiang underscores the importance of preparedness and the need for efficient crisis management to ensure the safety and well-being of tourists in such unpredictable conditions.
