Asia Pacific airlines witness significant uptick in international tourism traffic

Airport Passengers

Asia Pacific airlines report a significant rebound in international tourism, with a 76.9% increase in passengers, indicating a robust post-pandemic recovery in the travel sector.

The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has recently released preliminary traffic figures for November 2023, showcasing a substantial recovery in international passenger markets. This uptrend is a positive indicator for the tourism sector in the Asia Pacific region, which has been rebounding post-pandemic.

Impressive Growth in International Passenger Numbers

November 2023 marked a notable surge in international travel, with Asia Pacific airlines carrying a total of 25.1 million international passengers. This figure represents a significant 76.9% increase compared to November 2022 and achieves 80.9% of the passenger traffic seen in the same month of 2019, prior to the pandemic. This robust growth signals a healthy recovery and a return to near pre-pandemic levels of international travel.

Advancements in Passenger Traffic and Seat Capacity

The growth in passenger traffic, as measured by revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), stood at 66.9% year-on-year, outstripping the 61.3% expansion in available seat capacity. This growth in RPK highlights the strong demand for international travel in the region. The international passenger load factor, a key indicator of airline efficiency, also saw a healthy increase, climbing by 2.7 percentage points to reach 79.6% for the month.

Director General’s Insights on the Tourism Recovery

Commenting on these encouraging trends, AAPA Director General Mr. Subhas Menon emphasized the significance of the rebound. “During the first eleven months of 2023, Asia Pacific airlines transported a combined total of 250 million international passengers,” he stated, highlighting a 178% increase from the corresponding period in the previous year. This resurgence reflects the pent-up demand in the post-pandemic era and is a testament to the recovery of the tourism industry in the region.

A Positive Outlook Amidst Global Challenges

Despite challenges such as a slowdown in global economic activity and geopolitical tensions, the Asia Pacific carriers have witnessed healthy growth in international passenger demand throughout the year. This growth is in tandem with the restoration of flight frequencies and enhanced connectivity.

Looking ahead, Mr. Menon expressed optimism for the future of air travel. He anticipates a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of the Asia Pacific airline industry. However, he also noted the importance of airlines being vigilant over costs, especially given the uncertainties in oil prices and exchange rate fluctuations.

The latest figures from the AAPA are a strong indicator of the resilience and recovery of the tourism sector in the Asia Pacific region. The substantial increase in international passenger traffic points towards a rejuvenated interest in travel and tourism, signaling brighter days ahead for the industry and the economies it supports.
