Summer peak season in Port Stephens up on last year – Domestic holidays back on trend

While the tourism industry across Australia is reporting a rise in business as a result of overseas trips becoming more expensive, tourism operators in Port Stephens, have indicated bookings are up this Christmas on last year, with the peak summer season also starting earlier this year, with more people than usual holidaying in the region from early December.

A swing back to domestic holidays, fuelled by the dropping Australian dollar, has led to Port Stephens facing a busier Christmas season this year, according to Destination Port Stephens.

While the tourism industry across Australia is reporting a rise in business as a result of overseas trips becoming more expensive, tourism operators in Port Stephens, 2.5 hrs north of Sydney, have indicated bookings are up this Christmas on last year, with the peak summer season also starting earlier this year, with more people than usual holidaying in the region from early December.

Accommodation and cruise operators in Port Stephens and our own booking system indicate bookings are slightly up this Christmas over last year, with almost all accommodation booked out for the peak Christmas-New Year period and a heavy demand for attractions and activities,” said Rebecca Morley from Destination Port Stephens.

Extra services and tours are being added for visitors to cater for the growth in demand this year,” Ms Morley said.

The Australia Day period is also booking fast with many people expected to turn the Tuesday holiday into a long weekend in true Australian style,” Ms Morley said. “But between January 11 and 22 there are still pockets of availability for those keen to take a break in Port Stephens in January to enjoy our pristine beaches, blue waters, spectacular scenery, adventure activities, family attractions and great waterside cafes and restaurants.”

Port Stephens also has the advantage of being far enough away from Sydney to deliver an escape but close enough to make the drive quick and easy.
