Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Tourism Lochin Fayzulloev announced that a land border crossing was now open at the Kulma Pass between Tajikistan and China.
East and West are continuing to grow closer together. Last year, the countries along the Silk Road made substantial progress on the subject of easing border entry, establishing better transport links and cooperation in general. This was announced at ITB Berlin by Alla Peressolova, UNWTO’s officer responsible for the Silk Road, at a meeting of ministers and experts from 20 countries.
The Silk Road consists of numerous historical caravan routes, the main one connecting the Mediterranean with Eastern Asia. Thus, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Tajikistan, Iraq, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia are also among the countries on the Silk Road. More and more countries in Central Asia are now also issuing foreigners with visas on arrival at the airport.
Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Tourism Lochin Fayzulloev announced that a land border crossing was now open at the Kulma Pass between Tajikistan and China. By travelling the Pamir Highway and Karakorum Highway one can now enter Pakistan and its neighbouring countries.
ITB Berlin 2013, UNWTO – Silk Road Minister’ Meeting
During the meeting of experts Messe Berlin Director Martin Buck recalled Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen’s (1832 – 1905) achievements regarding the Silk Road. As a cartographer and explorer who lived in Berlin for many years, it was he who in his studies popularised the name of the Silk Road.
Including minor routes, the Silk Road extends for about 35,000 kilometres, stretching around the same distance as the Panamerican Highway from its northern end in Alaska to its southern tip, Tierra del Fuego, in South America.
