Myanmar opening for commercial flights gives families a chance to reconnect after two challenging years

Fully vaccinated travelers will be required to show a negative PCR test before arrival, pre-arrange a private transfer on arrival and stay only one night in hotel quarantine while waiting for the results of their in-country PCR test.

Yangon International Airport will be accepting international commercial flights again starting from 17 April 2022. This comes after a closure that lasted more than two years and caused many challenges for the people of Myanmar.

Booking an international flight makes it possible again for overseas Myanmar people to connect with their loved ones including family in Myanmar and for Myanmar people in-country to go overseas. Travelling is about meeting people: old friends and new friends, it is about sharing a meal, exploring new places and developing new perspectives. After two years dreaming of travelling, studying or working abroad, the re-opening of Yangon International Airport will enable people to do just that.

For international business travelers and tourists, it will be possible from 17 April 2022 onwards to apply online for a business e-visa and tourists visa through the website. Fully vaccinated travelers will be required to show a negative PCR test before arrival, pre-arrange a private transfer on arrival and stay only one night in hotel quarantine while waiting for the results of their in-country PCR test.

International travelers are also required to purchase Myanmar health insurance that covers Covid-19 (starting from 50 US$ for insurance valid for 15 days). If the in-country test is positive, the health insurance covers the additional costs of hotel quarantine and/or hospital fees according to requirements by the health authorities for up to 4,500 US$.

Cash withdrawals from ATMs in Myanmar are not possible at the moment and fewer businesses accept international credit cards. Travelers are advised to pre-arrange their trip to Myanmar through a travel agency and bring cash.

Air Asia was the first international airline to announce a new flight schedule to Yangon International Airport. Starting from 13 May 2022, Air Asia will fly weekly from Kuala Lumpur.

The re-opening of commercial flights comes after a turbulent and testing period for Myanmar since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, even during this period Myanmar people have continued to show their generosity and have been helping each other through the challenging years by donating food and other necessities to those most in need. This shows the generosity and hospitality that the Myanmar people are known for.
