Destination Mekong joins the Small Islands Developing States Tourism Organisation

SIDS are a distinct group of developing countries facing specific social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities.

In line with the announcement of the African Tourism Council’s (ATC) partnership with the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) Tourism Organization, ATC is proud to announce that Destination Mekong is a new partner of the SIDS Tourism Organization. Destination Mekong consists of the six governments of the Greater Mekong Subregion (Cambodia, PR China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam).

Parallel with its Sustainable Tourism Development Agenda, ATC is committed to being part of the solution and to raise its voice on one of the greatest challenges of our generation; Climate Change. African Islands and Developing States are vulnerable to the effects of climate change amidst the quest for sustainable development. ATC is keen to ensure African destinations, particularly the Island States are included in the global climate action solutions (COP26) to facilitate resilience and adaptation for the longevity and sustainable development of “Destination Africa”.

SIDS are a distinct group of developing countries facing specific social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities.

SIDS were recognized as a special case both for their environment and development at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit, held from June 3 – 14, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The SIDS Tourism Organization Forum covers Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean, the South China Sea and the Greater Mekong Subregion. The forum marks an important milestone in the SIDS economic integration agenda.

The six regional tourism groupings forming the SIDS Tourism Organization Forum  now include:

  • The African Tourism Council (ATC)
  • ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA)
  • Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)
  • Indian Ocean Tourism Organization (IOTO)
  • The Pacific TourismOrganization (SPTO)
  • Destination Mekong (DM)
