PATA in Action@Myanmar at WEF in Nay Pyi Taw. Over 1,000 participants from 55 countries took part in the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

At the World Economic Forum 2013 PATA was honoured to be invited to participate at World Economic Forum on East Asia 2013, in the capital of Myanmar. PATA CEO, Martin Craigs rounded off aligned advocacy activities as a guest panellist as well as meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, and the President of the Philippines, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and Member of Parliament from Kawhmu Constituency, Myanmar, stressed the need for vocational training. “We suffered from a very bad education system for many decades,” she said. “Many people in their forties are not equipped for gainful employment and it is not easy for them to go back to formal education.” Vocational education is the quickest way to give them the skills to find jobs, said the Nobel Laureate.

The meeting welcomed over 100 public figures representing 15 countries, including heads of state or government from Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam. More than 550 business leaders, over 60 Global Growth Companies and nearly 300 young leaders from the Forum’s Young Global Leaders and Global Shapers communities, together with other members of civil society, academia and media convened to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Myanmar and East Asia.
