ATEC welcomes Singapore Airlines’ announcement to commence direct flights into Canberra

The Singapore Airlines announcement presents a huge opportunity to establish Canberra as a new international gateway destination for Australia.

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has welcomed the announcement by Singapore Airlines to provide direct air services into Canberra.
 
Flights between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington four times per week will commence September 20.
 
This announcement will deliver a significant boost to the economy of Australia’s capital, and surrounding regions, by providing direct access to the rich and diverse range of experiences,” ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said.
 
Canberra offers visitors world class attractions with galleries, impressive nature reserves, a thriving food and wine scene as well as signature events, so this announcement is a great win for the region“.
 
The Canberra tourism export sector, led by VisitCanberra and the re-developed Canberra Airport, have been unified in their efforts to attract direct international air services over recent years and today is just rewards for their collective efforts.
 
The Singapore Airlines announcement presents a huge opportunity to establish Canberra as a new international gateway destination for Australia.
 
The success of this new international visitor hub will be in growing awareness of the destination and this can only be achieved long term and dedicated marketing efforts.
 
Investing in international tourism marketing is a proven success , with research showing a $15 return on investment for every $1 spent – not to mention the potential jobs growth delivered on the back of increased tourism visitation” Mr Shelley said.
 
ATEC congratulates Chief Minister Andrew Barr, the longest serving tourism minister in the country, and the Canberra Airport Group for their dedication and hard work.
