Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin welcomes unique Drone Show and Markets

  • 'Flight' Drone SkyShow 1

Canberra hosts first Drone SkyShow and Night Markets at Lake Burley Griffin, reflecting Australian culture, 25th-27th January 2024.

National, 10th January 2024 – The National Capital Authority (NCA) is bringing a first-of-its- kind Drone Show to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra. Assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council, the event will bring Australians together to Reflect, Respect and Celebrate what it means to be an Australian in 2024.

‘FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow and Night Markets’, a free community event, will take place over three evenings, starting 25th to 27th January, and bring together a Drone SkyShow consisting of a total of 600 drones, night markets, food & drink stalls, musicians and roving live performers. In an Australian first, the Drone SkyShow will be presented as a trilogy of stories each night to captivate audiences of all ages.

Drone SkyShow

For the first time in Canberra, an enormous Drone SkyShow will illuminate Lake Burley Griffin. Crafted by the team at AGB Creative, the production will depict a vast array of Australian experiences and stories across a trilogy of shows. The captivating drone choreography will be set to a bespoke soundtrack, ensuring a truly multi-sensory experience. Each 12-minute show will be played at intervals over the three nights so that it can be viewed by the whole community at the event hub, located at Commonwealth Place. If attendees would prefer to avoid crowds, the Drone SkyShow will be visible from the central basin shoreline of Lake Burley Griffin and Mount Ainslie. Following an open tender process, the NCA has engaged AGB Creative to craft the Drone SkyShow. AGB has a substantial track record of presenting large scale Drone Shows, and has been behind Vivid Light Sydney, Expo 2020 Al Wasl Plaza Dubai, among many others.

Night Markets

There will be midsummer night where crowds can expect multicultural cuisines and gourmet food stalls, one-of-a-kind clothing and locally made and designed art, jewellery, and homewares. There will also be vendors of delicious and decadent desserts and of course, ice cream. A variety of other restaurants and bars will also be in operation in the area.

Anthony Bastic AM, Creative Director of AGB Creative says “The creative intent is not just to entertain but to enlighten, engage, and inspire. “Flight” seeks to connect people with the heart of Australia, using the canvas of the night sky to tell a story that is both uniquely Australian and universally significant.”

Sally Barnes, Chief Executive, National Capital Authority says, “The National Capital Authority (NCA) is delighted to join hands with the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council in bringing FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow and Night Markets to Canberra. This visually captivating drone show not only showcases our nation’s beauty but also serves as a powerful invitation for all Canberrans, visitors and the broader community to come together in reflection and celebration of our shared Australian identity in 2024. As we bask in the visual splendour, let us revel in the essence of our land, appreciate the diverse tapestry of life, and take pride in the unique offerings of our National Capital. This event stands as a beacon of unity, embodying the spirit of reconciliation that continues to strengthen the bonds of our great nation.”

Dr. Caroline Hughes, Ngunnawal Elder and Executive Director, Collection Services Group, Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS): “As a Ngunnawal Elder, I am delighted to work with the National Capital Authority and AGB Creative to present the community with a show that celebrates Australian culture both ancient and contemporary. Our participation in the creative development of the show reflects our desire to invite the community to come together to reflect and enjoy the land and life here in the Capital, in the spirit of reconciliation and joy.”
