ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024: Elevating sustainable tourism in Laos

ASEAN Tourism Forum

ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 in Laos focuses on sustainable tourism, aiming to attract 2.7 million tourists and boost the economy, alongside hosting significant ASEAN events to enhance global appeal.

The prestigious ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2024 commenced in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, signaling a significant milestone in the region’s tourism industry. Running from January 22 to 27, this year’s forum is themed “Quality and Responsible Tourism — Sustaining ASEAN Future,” emphasizing a collective effort to enhance ASEAN’s tourism offerings and attract a broader international audience. The Lao News Agency (KPL) underscored the forum’s commitment to fostering sustainable tourism practices within the ASEAN community.

Coinciding with the ATF 2024, Laos has ambitiously launched its “Visit Laos Year 2024” campaign. This strategic move aims to position the country as a desirable destination for international tourists, aligning with the government’s expectations to draw at least 2.7 million foreign tourists this year. These efforts are projected to inject approximately 401 million U.S. dollars into the local economy, with forecasts for 2025 estimating a further increase in both tourist numbers and revenue.

To meet these ambitious targets, the Lao government is diligently working on enhancing infrastructure, diversifying tourism products, and improving service quality. These initiatives are crucial for creating a robust and appealing tourism ecosystem capable of attracting and satisfying international visitors.

2024 is a pivotal year for Laos, as it is set to host several significant events including the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings. These high-profile events are expected to bolster Laos’s reputation as a leading tourist destination. The anticipated influx of visitors and increased international collaboration will not only boost the country’s tourism sector but also contribute to the sustainable and responsible growth of the entire ASEAN region’s tourism industry.

The ASEAN Tourism Forum 2024 is more than just an annual event; it represents a concerted effort by ASEAN nations to embrace and promote tourism that is not only economically beneficial but also responsible and sustainable, ensuring the longevity and prosperity of the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
