Successful bid sees Seoul the 3rd Asian city to host the world’s largest fiscal conference

Seoul’s conference profile dramatically boosted

The city of Seoul has secured the winning bid to host the Annual Congress of the International Fiscal Association, the world’s premier gathering of finance specialists, in 2018. With the major event regularly attracting more than 2,500 professionals from over 100 countries, Seoul was chosen for its highly-developed MICE infrastructure and expertise in handling large-scale corporate meetings.

Facing worthy competition from other nations, including Russia and South Africa, Seoul was finally selected by IFA board trustees (on May 19th) as an ideal venue to host the congress with its ever-growing MICE track record. Representing Seoul in the bidding process, the Korea International Fiscal Association conducted an effective campaign over the last four years with the full support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Established in 1938, the International Financial Conference was set up in order to study and advance international and comparative law in regard to public finance. The very first IFA Annual Congress was held in 1955, alternately in European and non-European countries each year. Only twice before has it been conducted in Asia, with previous host cities being New Delhi and Kyoto. Seoul is the third.

Earlier in the year, the rules on financial subsidies for event organizers seeking to choose Seoul as a venue were changed when the government announced that the previous figure of 60 million (USD 49.6 thousand) would rise to 100 million (USD 82.8 thousand) for conventions with over 2,000 attendees. The move has already proved sound, with the city having already won the right to host as many as 13 prominent international conferences so far this year, with IFA 2018 the latest example.

The Seoul Convention Bureau is a division of the Seoul Tourism Organization, a joint public/private venture launched by the city of Seoul and private enterprise in February 2008 with a core mission to represent Seoul as a convention and tourism destination.
