Tiger Airways to launch new flights from Avalon Airport

Melbourne based Tiger Airways Australia Pty Ltd (a fully-owned subsidiary of Tiger Airways Holdings Limited), announced its third base for Australia and new flights to operate from Avalon Airport in Victoria later this year. At the same time, Avalon Airport announces a multi-million-dollar expansion of its facilities to cater for more flights with today’s announcement that Tiger Airways will fly from the airport later this year.

The new base at Avalon Airport will complement existing services at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport and allow Tiger Airways to further increase its fleet in Australia. The two new A320 aircraft which will be based at Avalon Airport will increase the number of Tiger Airways aircraft in Australia to 11.

Tiger Airways Australia Managing Director, Shelley Roberts, said that the opportunity to operate Tiger Airways flights from Avalon Airport was a major win for the growing airline, increasing opportunities for Australian travellers to enjoy our great low fares to their most wanted destinations.

“The new flights from Avalon Airport are further proof that we are well positioned to continue our growth and expansion in Australia as we have planned. Our new third base means more aircraft, more jobs, more low fares, more tourism benefits and further cements our commitment to the State of Victoria,’’ she said.

“We are thrilled to partner with Avalon Airport to provide more low-cost services. Visitors to the State will have greater access to the many leisure tourism drawcards such as the Great Ocean Road and the renowned food and wine regions of the Bellarine Peninsula and the Greater Geelong area.

“With Tiger Airways operating from both Tullamarine and Avalon Airports, it will be even more convenient and affordable to fly with Tiger Airways,”
Ms Roberts said.

For Avalon, the arrival of Tiger Airways complements the existing services and requires an expansion of the terminal.

Linfox Airports Executive Chairman David Fox said the arrival of Tiger Airways was the most significant announcement for Avalon Airport since passenger services began at the airport in June 2004. “This is an enormous boost for the airport and the travelling public. Avalon’s low-cost model is in sync with Tiger’s low-cost model and this will result in more competition which tends to lead to lower prices,” he said. “This is about Avalon being a genuine alternative destination and promoting competition so ultimately passengers get the best deal.”

To assist Tiger Airways determine which destinations it should fly to out of Avalon, the airline is seeking the opinion of Australians. “We’re all about evolving in response to customer demand. From today, we will have a voting button on our website homepage to enable anyone to cast their vote for which destinations they would like to see Tiger Airways fly from Avalon Airport.
