Leading in to the three day event international travel trade buyers and Australian travel sellers will undertake tours of the Top End to broaden their knowledge of the NT’s tourism product.
Darwin has won a bid to host one of the travel trades leading inbound/international tourism conferences, the 2018 Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) Meeting Place.
Acting Minister for Tourism and Culture, Eva Lawler said the annual event taking place from 19-21 November 2018 will attract up to 85 international travel trade buyers and approximately 300 Australian travel sellers to Darwin.
“Our record $103 million Turbocharging Tourism stimulus package that includes $26.57 million for targeted tourism marketing is boosting tourism in the NT, and to lure the lucrative 2018 ATEC Meeting Place travel trade event is a win for the Territory’s tourism industry,” Ms Lawler said.
“Darwin is at the centre of significant growth and as the thriving business hub of the NT and gateway from Asia, ATEC Meeting Place provides an opportunity to promote both the NT’s innovation alongside our rich culture and spectacular natural tropical scenery.”

Traditionally the annual Meeting Place event has taken place in Sydney, so for Darwin to be selected as the host city for the 2018 event will provide an opportunity for NT tourism businesses to build their profile and showcase the Territory as a destination.
ATEC Managing Director Peter Shelley congratulated the NT on their successful bid to hold the flagship industry event.
“Our members indicated a strong demand to hold Meeting Place in the NT and ATEC is excited to be taking the event to Darwin in November,” ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said.
“It’s an event that supports local tourism businesses to get valuable facetime with the most influential distributors in Australia’s export tourism marketplace and it really focuses the industry on the amazing local products on offer.
“This year we have seen a revival of the Crocodile Dundee legend as part of a concerted effort to engage international visitors, highlighting the rugged beauty of the Australian outback, and the NT is one of the best places to have a genuine Aussie experience.”
