Resolution adopted at the United Federation of Travel Agents’ Associations (UFTAA) General Assembly, held in Delhi on the role of buses and coaches in today’s travel and tourism world.

Bearing in mind:

  • The constantly increasing role of bus and coach travel as an indispensable element of the global travel and tourism industry
  • That buses and coaches are a key constitutive element of tourist and travel services, as one of the most economic, safe and environmentally-friendly means of transport affordable to all travellers
  • That tourism and coach tourism contribute significantly to businesses and welfare of visited tourist sites and cities
  • That, in many cases, collective bus and coach transport is the only alternative to ensure essential and high quality mobility services for various categories of citizen-travellers
  • That the quality of buses and coaches is constantly increasing, including through the use of industry voluntary commitments and quality enhancing schemes, such as the IRU star classification system for touring coaches

Supports:

  • Bus and coach industry efforts to further improve quality, safety and environmental performances, including through industry-own initiatives such as the IRU Training Academy and the IRU Bus and Coach Safety Programme
  • The creation of a modern global star classification system for buses and coaches to enhance quality and comfort of bus and coach services worldwide, through internationally harmonised and easily controllable uniform standards

Calls upon national and local Governments and international institutions to:

  • Recognise the role and contribution of bus and coach travel for the economy, mobility and for the environment
  • Avoid the introduction of discriminatory city access taxes for touring coaches
  • Exclude collective road passenger transport from selective and any new infrastructure charging system
  • Guarantee the ability of the road transport industry to provide flexible, competitive and safe transport services through appropriate driving hours and working patterns for drivers
  • Establish a level playing field at the lowest possible level for bus and coach travel regarding VAT and mineral oil taxation
  • Provide incentives to accelerate implementation of tourism, travel and road transport industries’ initiatives and best practices to improve sustainability and quality of services offered to customers
