The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said Monday the number of foreign tourists vising Thailand increased by nearly 13 percent during September despite the ongoing outbreak of bird flu virus in the kingdom.

Mr. Sontaya Khunplom said the Immigration Division had recorded 220,932 foreign tourists arrived to Bangkok International Airport in the space of ten days in early last month or an average of 22,000 tourists per day.

“It is almost 13 percent increase when compared with the figure from the same period of last year even though this year we have faced the outbreak of bird flu virus this year, said the minister.

The minister praised a good cooperation between government agencies responsible for solving bird flu crisis, saying the officials understood their roles.

“The ministy would continue to promote Thai tourism and would launch a more aggressive marketing plan to bring back confidence among international travelers,“ said Mr. Sontaya.

He said he was satisfied to see a trend that tourists would steadily arrive to the kingdom as a tourism season has already begun this month.

“The fact that Thailand has hosted several major conferences this year since the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC), the World AIDS Summit, and an onging meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), also helps promoting Thailand`s image among foreign tourists that our country is safe. The meetings are the best advertisement for our tourism industry, said the minister.(TNA)-E110
