The government plans to inject more than 200 million baht into Thailand`s southern region to develop tourist attractions in the country`s three southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

The government plans to support the development of the tourist industry in the three southernmost provinces to help boost local businesses, and to develop the area`s economy.

The Tourism and Sports Minister, Mr. Sontaya Kunplome, made the announcement during a tourism conference in the South yesterday attended by more than 500 participants from the public and private sectors.

The three provinces have a high potential for ecological and historical tourism, he said.

The 210 million baht fund is earmarked for two main programmes and six infrastructural projects, including building business centres, sports arenas and gymnasiums.

Tourism should help local businesses to recover, and help re-establish economic stability and peace in the three southern provinces, the minister said.

The Muslim-dominant area has suffered from underdevelopment and poverty for decades.

A wave of violence has swept through the area since January.

More than 270 have died in a variety of attacks by Muslim anti-government militants.
