The government expects tourism in Thailand`s southern resort island of Phuket to increase by more than 15% as a result of its recent promotional campaign in Malaysia and Singapore.

More than a hundred tourism agencies attended the government`s roadshow in country`s southern neighbours promoting Phuket and other nearby tourist spots.

The roadshow promoted four key selling points of the country`s three Andaman coastline provinces of Pang-nga, Krabi and Phuket — shopping, health and spa, sports and ecology tourism, the deputy chairman of the Phuket tourism business, Panu Masvongsa, told TNA on Monday.

More than 100,000 tourists from Malaysia and Singapore currently visit Phuket and the surrounding provinces each year.

This is now expected the number of tourist arrivals from the two neighbouring countries in Phuket will increase by at least 15 % after the roadshow.

Low cost airlines have increased their flights to Phuket, and this is expected to be a key factor in helping increase the number of tourists to the resort in the future.

Thailand`s tourism authorities now plan to hold a promotional campaign aimed at the Middle East market.

Tourists from there are believed to be big-spenders, and the industry expects them to spend more than 5,000 baht a day during their trips to Thailand.

The government hopes that the roadshow will help to attract more than 100,000 Arabian tourists to the area next year, he said.

The recent roadshow was a joint campaign between the tourism associations of Pang-nga, Krabi and Phuket, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
