The national airline of Thailand, Thai Airways International (THAI), has launched a series of special promotional campaigns to help revive the tourism industry in southern Thailand hard hit by last December`s tsunami.

THAI Vice President in charge of the Commercial Department Vasing Kittikul said yesterday that the campaigns, which began in July and would go through until October, had already begun to bear fruit.

The number of tourists booking THAI`s tickets with local tour packages had increased to more than 3,000 in July alone.

We`ve seen promising results for the local tourism industry soon after the special campaigns were launched. The campaigns are aimed mainly at promoting local tourism in the country`s southern Andaman provinces hit by the last December tsunami, namely Phuket, Krabi and Trang, he said.

The package tours offered each month during the special campaign period begin at only 4,000 baht.

Mr. Vasing said THAI was also cooperating with public and private agencies to organize heavily-discounted package tours to help promote tourism of the Andaman region.

The national airline has invited more than 500 foreign media representatives and travel agents from such countries as China, Taiwan and Japan to visit Phuket over the past few months to see the reviving local economy and to help promote the local tourism industry internationally.

THAI`s special campaigns are eventually expected to help stimulate tourism-related businesses in all other areas of the South. (TNA)
