TAT organises post-rainstorms clean-up for Samui and recovery activities for south Thailand

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is to join forces with the Samui Municipality, Samui Tourism Promotion Association, Thai Hotel Association South-East Chapter, Bangkok Airways and related agencies to organise a “Samui Big Cleaning Day” on April 24, 2011.
During March 26-29, 2011, Samui and the surrounding islands were hit by heavy rain storms and flooding but have now returned to normal. The clean-up is being organised to rally the provincial tourism industry, including hotels and resorts, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses, and help them publicise their preparedness to resume welcoming visitors and tourists.

Focussing mainly on the beaches and roads, the clean-up activities will be carried out by the TAT staff, media and other volunteers from the public and private sectors.

At the same time, a number of activities will be organised to help revive tourism to the affected areas and the southern part of Thailand during the upcoming Green Season:

– 2 Amazing Coasts South: A consumer travel fair will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok during May 26-29, 2011, to help companies which have been affected by the floods.
– Launch a new website travelsouththailand.com listing the routes, locations, and tourism activities in the affected areas as well as promote all other local operators in the unaffected areas.
– Motor Caravan: To be organised in July 2011 along the Bangkok – Surat Thani – Nakhon Si Thammarat route to show that the roads are now in good condition and back to normal.
– TAT Golf Challenge 2011 @ Surat Thani: To be held at Ratchaprapa Dam in May 2011 to highlight the diversity of golf activities in the southern region.
– Environmental Activities: A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) driven activity to be held in June 2011 by building 84 weirs on Samui in order to alleviate future flooding in the area.
– Promoting the domestic MICE sector: A group of domestic MICE buyers to be taken on a survey trip in June 2011 in cooperation with the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau to survey the readiness of the region to handle MICE activities.
– Visit South Thailand with TAT and Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS): Promotional activities on weekdays during the Green Season for BTS Skytrain cardholders, to be co-organised with the Bangkok Mass Transit System and Voyage Magazine.
– Agents and Media Fam Trip: Taking agents and tour operators from various associations as well as media to survey the southern areas and creating opportunities for creating new recovery-themed packages “Visit South… Help South” to be offered during the Green Season. This will be organised in May and June 2011.
– Cycling Tour: To be organised in July 2011 to highlight one of the fast-growing niche-markets for cycling enthusiasts along the Chumphon – Ranong route.

During the recent Songkran (Thai New Year) Festival between April 13-17, 2011, thousands of Thai and foreign visitors flocked to the main tourism attractions in the South; such as, Hat Yai (Songkhla), Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun, etc. The average occupancy rate for the southern region showed 60%. Hotels in Songkhla province were all full, but the occupancy on Samui fell by -40% over last year due to the impact of the rainstorms.

Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 700 kilometres south of Bangkok. Known as the Coconut Island, Ko Samui is one of the kingdom’s most famous and popular attractions, and the third largest island after Phuket and Ko Chang (Trat Province). A 50-kilometre paved road encircles Samui, making it easy to move around and visit different beaches.
