Juthamas Siriwan, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, reassured the international tourism industry that the recent events in the far South are isolated incidents and far away from the places where most tourists who visit Thailand are likely to go.

The restoration of most of the beautiful resorts and vibrant businesses in the Phuket area is virtually complete, said the Governor, whose agency is responsible for marketing Thailand to tourists worldwide. Most tourist locations in Phuket and most of the area`s infrastructure were undamaged to begin with. Other favorite tourist sites, from Pattaya and Hua Hin in the near South to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the North are totally unaffected by either the unrest in the far South or the damage caused nearly two months ago along the Andaman seacoast.

Added Mrs. Siriwan: The recent bravery and courage of the Thai people in their recovery and quick restoration of communities affected by the tsunami has been covered extensively in the international press and has earned the awe and admiration of the world. We are very happy to already see concrete signs of a tourism turnaround in our hotels and along our beaches and riverfronts. We look forward to welcoming back the millions of international tourists who love and visit us each year.

The Thai government has set up a public alert system with colors to indicate the level of security risk in various regions of the country. Most of the provinces visited by foreign tourists are coded green, which means that security risks from insurgents are low to non-existent. Yellow means that there is a medium-level security risk and all public places and government offices are on alert. Thailand`s troubled Narathiwat Province is one of the areas in the far South designated as a red zone or highest risk where the government has identified and is actively pursuing insurgent groups.
