TAT and Thai welcome overseas delegates of “Thailand Today” mega fam trip

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Thai Airways International (TG) have joined forces to welcome overseas delegates of the “Thailand Today” Mega Fam Trip to Thailand during 12-16 July 2010.

This mega fam trip will help both the TAT and Thai Airways take the lead in facilitating the recovery of the Thai tourism industry in the wake of the recent political crisis and also double up as a celebration of their 50th anniversary.

About 500 travel agents and journalists worldwide will participate in the complimentary tours which have been specifically designed to showcase some of Thailand’s best tourism destinations and products. They will first spend time in Bangkok, before choosing one of the post-tours covering attractions in the North, Northeast, and East Thailand.

The objective is to help the invitees – all of whom are important and influential players in the travel decision-making chain – to experience new and innovative tourism products and see for themselves that life has returned to normal throughout the kingdom.

TAT and TG will host 250 invitees each. According to the final number, 353 invitees will be from East Asia, South Asia and the South Pacific region, all of which are rapidly emerging source markets. About 115 invitees will be from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

The welcome reception dinner hosted by Mr Chumpol Silapa-archa, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, was held on 12 July 2010 at the Centara Grand Hotel in Bangkok.

In a preliminary welcome message, the Minister said, “There are many challenges ahead of us, but I am confident that the fundamental strength of the country, of the economy, and above all, of the Thai people and with the cooperation and support of our friends, partners abroad, will make sure that Thailand will continue to move forward to greater things.”

TAT Governor Mr Suraphon Svetasreni said, “Both TAT and Thai Airways International were founded in 1960, making this year our 50th anniversary. This is a very special occasion for both.

“TAT and Thai Airways are proud to have played a major role in making Thailand one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, well-regarded for the quality and variety of its tourist attractions, a premier shopping venue, and value-for-money products and services.

“We want to show the world that our country has returned to normal and is safe for visitors. We have specifically chosen to showcase the North, Northeast, and Eastern regions because they have lower market share than the very popular Southern Thailand beach resorts.

“However, they are all very culturally rich and diverse parts of the world which need more global exposure. Many of the new products that have emerged in these regions need to get more prominent presence on the international tour circuit.

“I hope the travel agents and media, in their primary role as opinion shapers, will reflect these new destinations and products in their writings and sales efforts” Mr Suraphon added.

Mr Piyasvasti Amranand, THAI President, said that the THAI-TAT “Thailand Today” cooperative effort aims to boost tourism and air travel to and from Thailand on a global scale.

He said, “For the past half century, THAI has provided “Smooth as Silk” products and services to the international travelling public that continue to be tailored to customer needs, based on THAI customer value perception.

“It is THAI’s hope that the “Thailand Today” Mega Fam Trip will further build confidence in Thailand as the destination of choice, boost air travel and tourism from the rest of the world to and from Thailand, celebrate and reaffirm the long relationship of THAI and TAT with industry partners and friends throughout the past 50 years and continue in strength into the future.”
