Sustainable tourism gets green light in Langkawi, Malaysia

US industry expert Pekan Artisan leads innovative development plans in Langkawi, an archipelago of 99 tropical islands off the coast of Malaysia, is renowned for its beauty and as a resort destination, with dramatic landscapes, unique attractions and high-end hotels. Pekan Design's proposals support the Malaysian government's vision to position Langkawi as one of the top 10 tourist islands in the world by 2015.

LANGKAWI – A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed which sees two exclusive and innovative developments in Langkawi, Malaysia, taking the next step in tourism closer to reality.

The MOA was signed between the Langkawi Development Agency (LADA) and Pekan Artisan, a tourism resort and attraction developer based in Malaysia specialized in eco-tourism and projects that demand a high level of cultural and historical integrity. Pekan Artisan is the sister company to US based Artisan Design, an innovative tourism and attraction design and development company founded by respected industry leader Robert Wyatt.

The launch event was witnessed by senior Malaysian government officials and covered extensively by Malaysian media.

Development proposals include plans for the Paradise Island Hotel and Gardens, which will see the expansion of Oriental Village, already an established visitor destination on Langkawi. This 10.35 hectare site will feature a 250-room eco-hotel, nestled in an eco rainforest with retail, restaurants, discovery and adventure paths, and four multimedia attractions celebrating local culture and wildlife. Also included in the development is a digital 4D theatre, which will feature a fly-over Langkawi immersive film. The first phase of the development is set to open in 2015.

The second development, on the tropical island of Pulau Intan Besar, will include a 100-room hotel alongside 17 villas designed as an exclusive and private luxury retreat.

Robert Wyatt, CEO of Pekan Artisan, said, “Our team of international designers and architects have created two unique developments for Langkawi. Both developments are eco-friendly, sensitively designed to reflect the beauty Langkawi, and both offer visitors a ‘back-to-nature’ experience that will connect visitors with the nature, history and culture of Malaysia.”
