For the first time in 14 years, Florida will officially host the 30th Annual Joint Meeting of the Southeast U.S./Japan Association (SEUS/Japan) and SEUS/Japan, to be held in Orlando, October 21-24, 2006.
The meeting, organized and coordinated on behalf of the State by the SEUS/Japan Florida Delegation, showcases the entire State of Florida by connecting business, government, economic development and education leaders with the very top officials of Japanese government and companies interested in expanding ties with the state and the region. Participation is limited to only 70 registrants from Florida and each member state. A large Japanese delegation is also expected this year.
The meeting provides a unique opportunity for businesses to network with leading Japanese companies. Florida only has the honor and privilege of hosting this event once every 14 years, under the host rotation system with six other states and Japan. The meeting will be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort and Country Club in Orlando.
This year`s event will be chaired by noted Florida business and community leader, Thomas F. Petway, III of Jacksonville; chairman of the board of Zurich Insurance Services, Inc.; co-founder of Prudential Network Realty and a franchise partner of the Jacksonville JAGUARS football team.
Japan remains the world`s second largest economy; the nation`s third largest export market; Florida`s second largest trading partner — with over $5.3 billion in bilateral trade — and the state`s fifth largest source of foreign direct investment. According to the consulate general of Japan in Miami, more than 175 key Japanese companies have chosen to invest billions of dollars in Florida`s economy, creating more than 25,000 new jobs for Floridians. Japan continues to present vast opportunities for Florida businesses.
SEUS/Japan organizers anticipate attendance of more than 700 delegates, including Southeast U.S. executives; governors of the seven SEUS/Japan member states; participation of the Japanese ambassador to the United States, the respective Japanese consuls general of Miami, Atlanta and New Orleans and senior executives from major Japanese commercial, industrial and financial firms such as: Mitsubishi, Nippon Steel, Nissan Motors Company, Sumitomo, Japan Air Lines, Matsushita Electric Company, Bank of Tokyo, Fuji Bank and All Nippon Airlines. Governor Jeb Bush is the official host of the event.
Japanese investment in Florida continues to flourish, with foreign direct investment at $2.4 billion and more than 100 Japanese businesses operating in the state. In turn, many Florida companies have established offices in Japan, including Enterprise Florida, Inc., the state`s economic development partner.
