The Shanghai Landscaping Administration Bureau plans to redevelop Shanghai`s six city parks, namely Fuxing, Penglai, Dongan, Heping, Yangpu and Zhabei, with a total investment of RMB100 million (US$12.4 million).

Most of these parks were built between 1950s and 1960s and their facilities have already aged and are broken. The bureau aims to preserve, repair and enhance the distinguished features of these respective parks.

Dongan Park, for example, will maintain its original Jiangnan courtyard architectural style. More than 10 types of bamboo will be added into the landscape and old tea houses will also be renovated. Fuxing Park, however, is to retain its French garden characteristics while Penglai Park will keep the ancient temples and towers from the Old City. The parks will see more green zones as well as public activity spaces. Various service facilities such as unobstructed walkways and broadcasting systems will also be introduced.

Shanghai has around 80 city parks that were built before 1980s. The city`s Landscaping Administration Bureau hopes to complete their round of redevelopment before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
