The Secretary-General and officials of the World Tourism Organization would like to express their sorrow at the passing of Pope John Paul II. They extend deep condolences to the entire Catholic community and to all those around the world who were impressed by the Pope`s personality and convictions.

Often called the travelling Pope, His Holiness was a strong advocate of international tourism and maintained a close relationship with the World Tourism Organization through the Vatican`s special status as Permanent Observer to WTO.

Tourism is not only a normal and current act of economic consumption, it is a value in itself, said Pope John Paul on his visit to WTO headquartersin Madrid on 2 November, 1982.

The Pope insisted that tourism be developed in an ethical manner and personally supported the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism adopted by WTO in 1999.

He also issued an annual message for World Tourism Day, stating last year that: Tourism improves relationships between individuals and peoples; when those relationships are cordial, respectful and based on solidarity they constitute, as it were, an open door to peace and harmonious coexistence.

Pope John Paul received members of the WTO Executive Council during its meeting in Rome in November 1992, addressing each member in their own language.

His attention and thoughtful guidance will be sorely missed by the international tourism community.
