Police arrests 11 persons for the Sultan Park incident in Maldives

Eleven people, including two Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested by the Maldives Police Service in connection with the bomb blast occured in the Sultan Park compound in Male’, the capital of the Maldives on Saturday, 29th September 2007.

The Sultan Park compound houses the National Museum which is visited by many foreigners coming into the Maldives.

The incident caused injury to 2 British, 2 Japanese and 8 Chinese nationals.

The Japanese and the Chinese nationals were released from the hospital after treating for minor cuts and burns. The British couple was treated for second degree burns and is now recovering in the ADK Hospital in Male’. The Maldivian Government is assisting with medical evacuation of the couple to their home city-Manchester. They are likely to fly out tomorrow.

Local and international tour operators and travel agents in Male’ reported at a meeting with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation held yesterday that it was business as usual following the incident. There have been no noticeable holiday cancellations in the wake of the incident.

The Saturday incident is the first of its kind in the history of the Maldives whose people have been known for their traditional hospitality and friendliness towards those visiting their shores and beaches.

The Saturday incident is widely seen as an isolated incident.
