In a move to boost tourism between Israel and Korea, Israel`s Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson signed a cooperation agreement with his South Korean counterpart Chung Dong-Chea in Jerusalem. In addition, the agreement aims to increase investment in both countries` tourism industries.

Tourism Ministry officials say that the agreement is an important step towards drawing more Korean tourists to Israel. South Korea sends the largest number of tourists to Israel out of any Asian country. In the first 10 months of 2005, a 37% increase in the number of Korean tourists to the country was recorded in comparison to the same period last year. In 2006, a further rise of 30% is anticipated in the number of visitors arriving from South Korea.

Israel`s Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson says a lack of direct flights is the main obstacle to increased tourism between the country and South Korea. The ministry will continue with its effort to open the country`s skies, he says.

Most tourists arriving from South Korea are Evangelical Christian and Catholic pilgrims. The country`s Christians number approximately 16 million or 26% of South Korea`s population.

South Korea`s Minister of Tourism and Culture is on a three-day tour of Israel and will visit sites in Jerusalem and the Galilee.
