Iraqi Airways to launch China routes in October

National carrier Iraqi Airways is looking to fly to Asia from October with frequencies to Bangkok and China.

BANGKOK- Many  would have taken the airline as buried a few years ago. But since a relative peaceful settlement has been found in Iraq, national carrier Iraqi Airways is back in business. And it now envisions to launch new flights from Bagdad to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Bangkok in October.

Director general Saad Al-Khafaji told recently to aviation magazine that the airline is ready to launch services to China and Thailand after renewing all the requisite bilateral agreements last month.

He indicated to the magazine that Iraqi Airways could operate those routes with a Boeing 767s, 777 or Airbus A330 in its fleet before receiving 10  Boeing 787s Dreamliner by 2015. Iraqi Airways has been back to Asia earlier in September  after a 34-year hiatus. It now flies twice a week with a Boeing  777 to Kuala Lumpur. Al-Khafaji says that Iraqi Airways will base roughly half of its operations at the planned 6 million-passenger capacity Middle Euphrates International Airport which is currently under tender.
