IHG partnership with Oxford Brookes University recognized by the IRM with Global Award

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Oxford Brookes University’s School of Hospitality Management (OSHM) were the winners of the Partnership of the Year Award in the Institute of Risk Management’s (IRM) Global Risk Awards 2013.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Oxford Brookes University’s School of Hospitality Management (OSHM) were the winners of the Partnership of the Year Award in the Institute of Risk Management’s (IRM) Global Risk Awards 2013.

In a glittering awards ceremony in London, UK, hosted by the Institute of Risk Management at the prestigious Grand Connaught Rooms, around 350 international risk professionals gathered to recognise and celebrate world-class risk management.

The final shortlist of nominations received from across the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East was judged by leading risk management figures from 16 countries across five continents. IRM chief executive Steve Fowler said: “As the leading international educational institute in the field of risk management, IRM is uniquely placed to identify and reward outstanding performance. Our judges were astounded by the quality and range of entries received.”

The Partnership of the Year Award recognised IHG and Oxford Brookes for work that has set new standards in the field of risk management and has brought about tangible benefits at both educational and practical levels. The other award contestants were the Crossrail project, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Group of Experts on Risk Management in Regulatory Systems, the MITIE Group – QBE partnership and the Parsons Brinkerhoff – SeRoN project.

Receiving the Award, John Ludlow, IHG’s Senior Vice President and Head of Global Risk Management said: “Our partnership with Oxford Brookes has always been about what each of us could give to the other institution, each gift of knowledge reciprocated time and time again. I am very grateful to Alex not only for contributing to our risk management discipline at IHG but more so for the wonderful team of young talent that he has helped inspire and coach.” The other award recipient was Dr Alexandros Paraskevas, Senior Lecturer in Strategic Risk Management at Oxford Brookes who said: “This Global Risk Award is the result of 7 years of collaboration between IHG’s incredible Risk Team around the world and an amazing bunch of young, bright researchers who are being developed to become the new generation of risk management leaders. Such collaborations require visionary leadership and strong work ethic, two attributes which are often scarce in the industry but abundant in John and his entire team.”

The IHG – Oxford Brookes collaboration covers all areas of risk management, from the management of corporate and operational risks, to security, crisis management, business continuity, risk management training and risk financing. A team of young Oxford Brookes’ researchers led by Dr Alexandros Paraskevas works side-by-side with seasoned IHG risk professionals all over the world in a joined effort to learn from each other, set new standards in risk management practice and develop new talent in the field.

Examples of this joined effort in Asia include the collaboration of Brookes’ team with Keith Xia, IHG’s Head of Risk Management, Greater China, on the development of a system to measure and report risk management maturity in hotels; the collaboration with Shuh Lin Tan, IHG’s Director and Head of Risk Management, Asia Australasia on the effectively managing natural disasters and ensuring the business continuity of the Group’s operating system; and the development of a two-day risk management ‘crash’ course for hotel industry executives delivered last year by John Ludlow in Hong Kong. Also, Raksha Singh, a Brookes’ team member who worked for a year with IHG’s risk managers in Europe, was subsequently hired by IHG and works now as risk manager in charge of the Group’s portfolio of hotels in India.
