The average price of a standard double room in Europe has climbed to 107 pounds in April, reaching the highest point since October 2009. City destinations such as Prague (92 pounds, +44%) and Rome (146 pounds, +33%), are showing high price increases. Conversely, beach destinations such as Alcudia on Majorca or Side in Turkey are particularly affordable in comparison to previous years. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) prepared each month by the hotel price comparison website trivago.co.uk.

With the beginning of the spring travelling period, the European average has risen seven percent to 107 pounds, in comparison to March 2011. This brings the European average to its highest point since October 2009. In particular, hotel rates in countries such as the Czech Republic (92 pounds, +49%), Turkey (115 pounds, +29%), and Holland (137 pounds, +26%) have shown particularly strong changes. Nevertheless, beach destinations are still very affordable this month, with islands and coastlines in Portugal, Spain, and Turkey offering surprisingly low overnight costs in comparison to the same period last year.

Good deals on beach destinations
Beach destinations are in high demand over the Easter holidays, but popular holiday locations such as Majorca, Turkey, and the Portuguese island of Algarve are offering comparatively low hotel rates. In Majorca, Alcudia (44 pounds) and Cala Ratjada (55 pounds) are down 24 percent and seven percent respectively. The Turkish holiday resorts of Alanya (45 pounds, down nine percent) and Side (46 pounds, down five percent) are also offering great prices. In Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote, one night in a standard double room costs 48 pounds (a ten percent drop). Similarly affordable offers are to be found in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife (55 pounds, down seven percent) and in Alicante on the Costa Blanca (58 pounds, down three percent). In Albufeira on Algarve, hotel guests can expect to pay an average of 51 pounds (six percent lower) and in Funchal on Madeira (91 pounds), hotel rates are fourteen percent lower than a year ago.

Europe: high prices in city destinations
Travellers thinking about visiting European capitals as holiday or weekend destinations may wish to reconsider; April prices are considerably higher than in previous months. In the Spanish cities of Barcelona (113 pounds, +15%), Seville (109 pounds, +38%), and Madrid (94 pounds, +6%), prices have risen dramatically. Similar price hikes are to be found in Amsterdam (148 pounds, +27%), Venice (183 pounds, +29%), and Istanbul (121 pounds, +27%). Lisbon has seen its overnight rates rise twenty percent to 91 pounds, while the Belgian town of Bruges has also climbed twenty percent to 125 pounds per night. On the Cote d’Azur, prices are also considerably higher: Nice has reached 96 pounds (up 25 percent), while Cannes (105 pounds) is now 21 percent higher than in March.

UK: Minor rate changes across the country
In contrast to the rest of Europe, rates in the UK are relatively steady this month; the majority of British cities have seen limited upward or downward shift in their average rates. Prices in Glasgow have stayed level at 78 pounds per night, while Leeds has seen its hotel rates fall by one percent to 74 pounds and Bristol’s prices have fallen by three percent. In the other direction, Manchester’s average rate has climbed two percent to 94 pounds per night, while overnight costs in Blackpool have increased by only four percent. The only cities to experience significant price climbs are Edinburgh (93 pounds, +5%), Liverpool (93 pounds, +8%), and London (156 pounds, +8%), which despite the high profile Royal Wedding at the end of the month has seen only limited impact on current availability rates.
