Hotel Okura Tokyo receives a Commitment to Excellence Award

The Hotel Okura Tokyo picked up one of the Commitment to Excellence Awards at Leading Hotel of the World’s fourth annual awards ceremony in Venice. The award acknowledges hotels whose concept of service extends beyond their immediate walls, and whose exceptional efforts exert a positive impact on our world in the areas of the environment, community outreach and cultural support.

In this respect Hotel Okura Tokyo is a very worthy winner having spearheaded a number of charitable programmes to promote music and the arts.

These include the annual ‘Charity Art Collection Exhibition’ which takes place at the hotel in August each year. Hosted by the Corporate Cultural Exchange Committee it brings together works of art that are owned by companies, organisations and individuals and therefore rarely viewed and exhibits them in aid of the Japanese Red Cross. Last year around 362,000 people attended, raising a total of 146,000,000 Japanese yen (£938,000), it is now in its 15th year.

In its aim to extend the diffusion of music the hotel also holds a monthly ‘Lobby Concert 25’. Begun in 1987 and taking place on the 25th of each month, the next one will take place on Christmas Eve, the free concerts are a short showcase of musicians playing mainly classical pieces whilst audiences comprising of hotel guests and public enjoy a complimentary glass of sparkling wine.

Each year two of the musicians featured in the concerts receive the ‘Hotel Okura Music Award’. The winners are then presented with a grant and a supplementary prize.

In the spirit of international exchange the hotel also hosts the annual ‘World Gardening Fair’, when the wives of 10 Ambassadors to Japan are invited to create distinctive gardens that represent the flowers and trees of their respective cultures and countries. These are displayed during ‘Golden Week’ at the end of April and beginning of May at the hotel and money raised goes to ‘Save the Children’ in Japan.

The five-star Hotel Okura Tokyo, flagship property for Japanese hotel company Hotel Okura Co. Ltd., is located in the heart of the Japanese capital.
