Hong Kong International Airport soars to 80% pre-pandemic levels

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reports passenger numbers rebounding to 80% of pre-pandemic levels, with a new post-pandemic daily record of 164,000 passengers on December 23. Full recovery expected by end of 2024.

Hong Kong – Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is poised to conclude 2023 with a remarkable achievement, as passenger numbers have rebounded to 80% of pre-pandemic levels, according to a report from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). This significant recovery is in alignment with AAHK’s earlier forecasts, signifying a positive turn in the aviation industry.

During the Christmas holiday travel peak, HKIA experienced a surge in passenger traffic, with more than 160,000 passengers daily passing through the airport on both the 22nd and 23rd of December. Notably, December 23 marked a milestone with 164,000 passengers handled in a single day, setting a new record for post-pandemic passenger volumes.

AAHK also noted that aircraft movements have consistently exceeded 80% of pre-pandemic levels since mid-December. On December 23, HKIA achieved a new post-pandemic record with 1,034 flight movements in a single day, underscoring the airport’s resilience and recovery momentum.

The encouraging trajectory of passenger traffic at HKIA has instilled confidence that the airport is on track to fully restore its pre-pandemic operational levels by the end of 2024. This resurgence is a testament to the collective efforts of the aviation industry, stakeholders, and health measures implemented to ensure the safety of travelers.

As the airport continues to regain its footing and welcome more passengers, it signifies a positive outlook for Hong Kong’s role as a regional aviation hub and underscores the gradual revival of international travel in the post-pandemic era.

The aviation industry, including Hong Kong International Airport, remains committed to prioritizing passenger safety and adhering to stringent health protocols while working diligently to restore connectivity and contribute to global economic recovery. The achievement of 80% pre-pandemic passenger levels at HKIA marks a significant step towards normalcy in the aviation sector.
