HBA sets new standard for luxury and innovation in Asia with The Westin Ningbo

Located in the historic Silk Road seaport of Ningbo in the Zhejiang province of Eastern China, The Westin Ningbo is a stunning addition to the city’s hospitality offerings and provides the utmost of service and style to business and leisure travellers alike.

Leading hospitality design firm HBA continues to grow their portfolio in Asia with the completion of another groundbreaking property – The Westin Ningbo. The hotel marks HBA’s 25th designed Westin for Starwood. Located in the historic Silk Road seaport of Ningbo in the Zhejiang province of Eastern China, The Westin Ningbo is a stunning addition to the city’s hospitality offerings and provides the utmost of service and style to business and leisure travellers alike.

A striking multi-towered glass building nestled in the heart of the city, The Westin Ningbo marks the first property the hotel chain has opened in the Zhejiang province. HBA was tasked with creating a design environment that matched the standards that Westin’s international clientele and business travellers have come to expect from the brand while also reflecting the rich history and culture of Ningbo.

The word Ningbo translates in English to “Serene Waves” and the HBA team took the term as their chief inspiration. The spaces are quiet and soothing and employ a clean and contemporary geometric sensibility that lends a sense of stillness to the hotel. Upon entry, guests are greeted with a sweeping expanse of light beige marble accented with rich wooden finishes. The public spaces, bedrooms and spa are bathed in neutral yet warm tones and the use of brilliant yet soft lighting brings airiness to the atmosphere. The effect is an oasis of serenity for the sophisticated international traveller.

According to HBA Co-CEO Ian Carr, “We wanted to provide a space that was a retreat, where guests could be restful amidst their busy lives and emerge refreshed. We gave attention to each detail so that every moment the guest spends in the hotel will be enjoyable. We used curved spaces and soft lighting to achieve this calming sensibility, but kept the tones bright to make the atmosphere feel fresh.”

Hotel Rooms
Carefully designed to match Westin’s standard of excellence in comfort, each of the hotel’s 312 bedrooms boast sleek and uncluttered contemporary design coupled with plush furnishings and luxurious fabric finishes. Touches such as a modern task desk and mood lighting allow hotel guests to be productive or take a break.

Dining
The Westin Ningbo houses six different dining options, with the showpiece being Zen5es, a Cantonese restaurant that serves the seafood that Ningbo is famous for. The restaurant is broken up into two floors and cool grey blue tones are reminiscent of sea colours. The space is laid out to provide intimate dining areas with cushy seating and finished with traditional touches such as pendant lanterns.

Spa
A part of Westin’s Heavenly Spa series, HBA designed a luxurious space for the ultimate relaxation experience. Drawing on Ningbo’s history as a port along the Silk Road, HBA filled the treatment space with lush fabrics and rich woods. The active space includes a spectacular 25-metre indoor infinity pool.

Meetings and Events
With 1,365 square metres dedicated on meetings and events to work with, HBA focused on creating spaces that were flexible to the needs of every occasion. The fully scalable grand ballroom is a feat of design engineering, with fully operable walls that are artfully concealed behind large lattice slat walls.
