HBA completes Park Hyatt Hyderabad in India

Global design firm brings international sensibility to the Region with a contemporary hotel that is locally authentic, cultural and sophisticated.

NEW YORK – Leading the hospitality interior design industry since 1965, HBA continues their rich tradition of integrating faraway cultures with the height of modern luxury with the design of the Park Hyatt Hyderabad, the first city Park Hyatt hotel in India.  Now open and situated only minutes from the city’s banking and financial district, the Park Hyatt Hyderabad brings top of the line luxury to an emerging location, where HBA showcased local Indian cultures and materials in their innovative design while crafting a memorable hospitality environment.

Park Hyatt Hyderabad marks HBA’s 45th completed project in India and their ongoing commitment to the region.  Since HBA’s 1997 Juhu Beach Marriott and Grand Hyatt Mumbai, HBA has grown their portfolio in the country to encompass some of the world’s finest nameplates, including the Four Seasons, Hyatt, JW Marriott, Sheraton, Shangri-La and Taj. HBA’s presence in India is growing even stronger with over 20 new projects set to open in the coming years.

The financial, economic and political capital of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad is one of the richest cities in India and has been named the second best Indian city for doing business, according to a World Bank Group report. It is one of India’s prominent biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical hubs and has large tracts of land devoted to software development and information technology research.

In order to design the interiors of the five star deluxe hotel in Hyderabad, HBA worked with the Park Hyatt brand and the architects John Portman & Associates to create a contemporary environment that offers the discerning traveler an atmosphere of understated elegance and luxury, coupled with gracious service and the welcoming warmth of a personal residence.

HBA took inspiration from their surroundings for the overall design. During the initial design stages, HBA designers spent time getting acquainted with the environment visiting local museums, viewing historical architecture and studying local culture and fashion.

The result translates into Indian colors, patterns and fabrics that can be seen throughout the hotel. Indian motifs are found in the carpets which feature traditional henna patterns but are massively oversized in scale to look contemporary and not traditional. Silk accents and vibrant colors influenced by Indian saris also permeate throughout the hotel’s design.

The modern, eight-story Park Hyatt Hyderabad includes 185 guestrooms and 24 suites on the first six floors, with 42 service apartments on the two uppermost floors. Clad in natural Madurai granite from South India, the façade is clean and modern with expansive glass doors and windows, and an impressive porte-cochere with a shimmering steel mesh ceiling fixture which gives a chandelier effect at the entrance.

The impressive lobby is designed with sparkling water features and plants that surround the hotel’s signature 35-foot tall white, abstract John Portman sculpture. Titled “Becoming,” the sculpture is a twenty-seven foot high (8.23 meter) undulating form in a matte white finish prominently positioned at the end of a 131 foot long (40 meter) linear reflecting pool that runs the length of the lobby. Serving as a contemplative counterpoint to the dramatic atrium space, it is mounted on a thin reflective stainless steel platform, creating the impression that the sculpture floats just above the surface of the water.

“The most distinguishable design feature in the seven story hotel is the open atrium. We were able to create a space that is both tiered and staggered allowing an enormous amount of light to break through. The space feels intimate because of the atrium’s cocooning affect,” said HBA Senior Associate Greg Bates.
