Garuda will not cease its international flight service to Bali after protests from the tourism industry in Bali as Garudas President Director, Emiersyah Satar confirmed. Satar said that the airline is currently considering the possibility of broadening its network hence offering a wider range of options to suit the individual needs of its passengers; flying direct to Bali for leisure travelers; and direct to Jakarta for passengers traveling for business purposes.

As part of the company`s operational program, Garuda Indonesia is currently evaluating its network effectiveness. The results from the evaluations have not only determined Garuda to continue its service to and from Bali and destinations abroad, the airline plans to further increase its service by offering an alternative route; stopovers in Denpasar or fly direct to Jakarta. These measures give more travel choices to passengers traveling to Indonesia for business, pleasure or family visits.

The number of international passengers carried by Garuda to Bali during January through September 2006 was 526,544 or 8.4% of total passengers carried, contributing 22.4% of the airlines total income for that period. Garuda offers a total 1.1 million seats , equal to one third of total available seats, direct to Bali from Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Tokyo, Osaka and Singapore. While Garuda serves a total 21 cities, including from Jakarta to Bangkok, Hongkong, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Jeddah and Riyadh.

Passengers from international destinations on a business trip to Jakarta will be able to fly direct to Jakarta, while leisure travelers destined for Bali can equally go direct to the Denpasar, Bali. Additionally, Garuda Indonesia already serves the Jakarta-Bali route 10 times daily.

To this date, Garuda Indonesia`s service connects Bali to various international cities, among them Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Tokyo, Osaka, and Singapore. In 2006 alone, Garuda`s seat capacity on flights from Bali to cities abroad totaled 1,1 million seats or around 30% of the total number of passengers carried by Garuda Indonesia.

Furthermore, efforts to enhance its international network are being done through code-sharing arrangements with several airlines, for instance Garuda Indonesia has a code-sharing deal with Malaysia Airlines on flights from Indonesia to Europe (London, Frankfurt, Manchester) via Kuala Lumpur, and with Qatar Airways on the Jakarta-Doha service.
