Despite the assurance from the Government not to replace for political reasons presidents and head of State companies, the Bangkok Post reports in its edition dated May 22 that Thai Airways International President Piyasvasti Amranand had been fired on Monday as Thai Airways’ president and chief executive officer. The move is largely described  as politically motivated with the ex CEO challenging TG board of directors.

The Board of Directors consists of members who are all linked to political parties and most of them have little to do with air transport. Mr. Piyasvasti explained to the Bangkok Post that he did not get any clear explanation from Thai Chairman Ampon Kittiampon about his dismissal despite the fact that he passed successfuly a performance evaluation test last year. The ex President is now ready to take legal action against the Board. Mr Piyasvasti said his evaluation score was 86% and he thought his removal has been made possible as someone is probably looking for his position or as he looked to limit corruption and nepotism within the airline.

Jamsri Sukchoterat, president of the THAI labour union, came to the rescue to support the former President by telling the newspaper that Mr Piysavasti’s firing was irrational and would affect Thai Airways credibility as a listed company. THAI board appointed Chokchai Panyayong, executive vice president for strategies and business development, as acting president until a new president is appointed.
