USA Today reported that executives are gingerly getting back to traveling after having reduced their trips over the past couple of years. Yet they aren`t letting go of penny-pinching habits formed during the recession. The average corporate cost for a domestic airline ticket fell 12 percent and the average international ticket cost rose 8 percent from 2000 through 2003, says Topaz International. Far more company travel and entertainment budgets will be higher than lower this year compared with last, according to a recent survey by the National Business Travel Association.
As companies save on individual trips, they are loosening up enough to allow employees to attend conventions and meetings: Last month in Dallas, the Hobby Industry Association reported its first sold-out show in 10 years. About 13,000 attendees visited 1,152 exhibiting companies and 3,049 booths. In New Orleans, the Society for Neuroscience attracted a record 28,000 attendees in November. The American College of Cardiology, which asked for 15,000 rooms for its upcoming March 6-10 convention, added 200 rooms. Late last year, Boston reported a citywide sellout of hotel rooms for the first time since the tech boom imploded.
